A digital video disc (DVD) is considered to be a type of media consumable, others being video compact disc (VCD), magnetic tapes, and others. And just like the other types of media, the DVD type is used primarily for video and data storage.
DVDs are more preferred over VCDs as one DVD can hold as much as 4.7 GB, or 120 minutes, equal to four times the capacity of an ordinary VCD. Thus, DVDs can store much more files and information.

These DVDs also have many varieties and types, each designed for specific purposes. There are the SD DVD, high-definition DVD, the recordable ones like DVD-R and DVD+R, and the rewritable ones like DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
DVDs are also sold at various prices, depending on the quality and sustainability. You can buy those cheap ones or those branded ones like Imation, Sony, Hitachi, and others that are sold at quite expensive prices. Those more expensive ones are also more reliable and are not as vulnerable to damages as compared to cheap DVDs.
